Welcome to an essay of radical ideas. Like really “crazy” ideas of the type that people’s automatic, default reaction is “That would never work”. It’s easy to dismiss something we’ve never tried and which is so far outside our experience of the world. But what if….what if it worked? It might actually create some long term, systemic and cultural change that just might save the planet and help millions if not billions of people.
In true New Economy fashion, I cannot claim ‘ownership’ of these ideas. They come from many sources, and many great thinkers, and are a mish-mash of my own experiences, perspectives and ideology. And yes, I’m pretty idealistic, so strap in!
Enough
At the crux of it all for me is the idea of ‘enough’. Humans are terrible at practicing this concept and we’ve been trained to always be seeking more. In some ways, more is good. It has propelled us to a point where a large number of people live materially comfortable lives and we’ve had incredible innovations driven by a thirst for more knowledge. But the problem is we’ve left 50% behind. The even bigger problem is that on August 2, 2017, we started using more from nature than our planet can renew in the whole year. As a species we have demonstrably failed. It is time for something new.
